[1] The strict definition of convective instability is associated with a decrease of equivalent potential temperature, qe (or, equivalently, wet-bulb potential temperature, qw) with height.

[2] Again, strictly speaking, there is a small distinction between a reversible moist adiabat and a moist adiabat associated with psuedo adiabatic processes (where the precipitation falls out during ascent). Thus, to be quite correct, a parcel descending during a reversible moist adiabatic process would not have exactly the same qe as associated with a pseudoadiabatic process. This distinction is very small and is not particularly relevant for the purposes of this discussion.
