Valliappa Lakshmanan (Lak) OU/NSSL home page

Starting Sep. 2014, I am taking a leave of absence from OU and NSSL.

I am joining the The Climate Corporation as Director, Quantitative Meteorology. I will be leading the team building weather inputs for a data analytics system whose goal is to improve agricultural yield. You can reach me there at

Research: All my research publications are online; my Google Scholar page captures the ways in which my work is used by other scientists.
Book: My book on Automating the Analysis of Spatial Grids can be read online and ordered from Springer's website. If you belong to an organization whose library subscribes to Springer publications, you can order a paper copy of the book for $25 and/or download PDFs of the chapters for free. If not, then the most inexpensive way is to order the book on . The sample code that goes with the book is open-source and available from github.
Teaching: Course slides on Spatial Programming and GIS (Fall 2013) and Automated Analysis of Spatial Grids (Spring 2011/2013) are online. I also write, and teach, a number of Java courses for ROI, a technology training company.
Software: I designed and built much of the Warning Decision Support System Integrated Information (WDSS-II). I also developed the Android mPING citizen-scientist weather reporting application. LaTeX style files for American Meteorological Society conferences and the E-Journal of Severe Storms Meteorology (EJSSM) can be downloaded off this website. Java code for analysis of spatial grids that goes with my book is open-source and available from github.
About: My Resume/Curriculum Vitae is reasonably up-to-date.
Informal: My blog is less buttoned down, as are my writings on bridge. I'm married to Abi; we have two kids in grade-school. I am on Facebook, LinkedIn, BBO, and Google+. But email is the best way to contact me.
