Weather Watch: Tornado Safety The safest places to survive a tornado is in an underground basement or storm shelter, then in an interior room on the first floor away from windows (closet, bathroom). Do not seek shelter in a mobile home or car. Despite heavily publicized video footage, do not stay under a highway overpass. Not only will you block traffic, but new research indicates your chances of surviving there decrease markedly because of the channeling of the wind there. If you are camping and a tornadic thunderstorm threatens, find the best available shelter from flying debris: get low and out of the wind and cover your head.
