WEATHER WATCH COLUMNS: MAY 2002 ISSUE ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weather Watch: Ultraviolet Radiation Some exposure to the sun is healthy, but too much ultraviolet radiation can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, cataracts, premature aging of the skin, and a weakened immune system. Being outside at mid-day, in the summer, at high elevation, and in a southerly location are factors that increase your potential exposure. Clouds filter only part of the sun's rays, so cloudy skies can still put you at risk for overexposure. Water, snow, and other surfaces can reflect UV upward, thereby increasing exposure further. Take extra caution when paddling on the water and when near the water. <-David Schultz, NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory> -------------------------------------------------------------------------
